Originally, 212 was the sole area code covering all five boroughs of New York City. As demand for phone lines increased over time, the city was split into two area codes: 718 was assigned to the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, while 212 remained designated for Manhattan, including the Financial District, Midtown and Harlem (Uptown).
